Wegen AIDS Talkline |

On December 2006, Wegen AIDS Talkline celebrated its second anniversary. During its two years of service, the Talkline has been contributing to its share to bring about meaningful results in the efforts geared towards the fight against HIV/AIDS. With its 24 lines, the Talkline operates with 31 highly qualified counselors and three well-skilled supervisors thereby providing its services to callers from across the nation, Monday to Saturday from 8:00am till midnight. The Talkline also offers its services in various languages such as Amharic, Guragigna, Tigrigna, Oromifa, Hadiyisa and English. What is more is that, through its Client Service Representative, the Talkline also tracks and handles complaints that come from clients regarding various HIV-related issues. The state-of-the-art HIV and AIDS telephone hotline system can be accessed free-of-charge both from landlines and cell phones.
The Talkline receives a huge volume of calls daily, mostly from Addis Ababa (92.49%). On July 24, 2006 the Talkline received a peak of 6,296 calls in a single day. The majority of callers (71.37%) are male and aged 15-19 years (44.46%). Most callers ask for general information on HIV and its transmission, followed by counseling and prevention interventions. Also, 80.11% of callers had not yet been tested for the virus. See the charts below for more figures.
