Dawn of Hope

Dawn of Hope is one of earliest association of people living with HIV/AIDS, including orphans due to HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia. It was founded in 1998 by a group of eleven HIV-positive people with the purpose of educating the people and getting the rights of HIV-positive persons respected. Now Dawn of Hope counts more than 10,000 members and it has twelve branch offices in Addis Ababa, Nazreth, Debre Zeyt, Debre Birhan, Awasa, Shashemene, Dilla, Harar, Bahir Dar and Humera implementing the Dawn of Hope program of education, care and support, and advocacy throughout the country. The activities are assisted by the Head office in Addis Ababa, where the members’ Executive Committee and a professional staff direct the organization.

Hiwot HIV/AIDS Prevention Care and Support Organization (HAPCSO)

HAPCSO was established in 1999 to fight against HIV/AIDS. It was founded by Nurse Tibebe Maco (pictured above), who, upon realizing the seriousness of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia, stopped her practice as a nurse and established a local NGO to help prevent the further spread of the disease. HAPCSO's project area is in Woreda 23, which is located in the outskirts of Addis, Ababa. The area represents the city's most impoverished settlements, characterized by overpopulation, unemployment and destitution.

This comprehensive portal, part of OneWorld.net, offers users a variety of information on HIV/AIDS, including news, debates, and abundant resources, including a collection of the latest tools for HIV prevention from around the Internet. Its "Guide to AIDS" is a good place to visit for a global overview of the impact of HIV/AIDS and major political issues surrounding HIV/AIDS, though basics on HIV/AIDS are somewhat sparse. The site provides access to information by topic, country, or keyword.

AIDSlink - South Africa

AIDSlink provides a safe and caring environment for destitute HIV+ men and women in South Africa and trains them in skills that will enable them to produce items they can sell to generate income. AIDSlink also sponsors a foster care program for AIDS orphans. AIDSlink functions as a support system for members by providing information, education, counseling and problem solving sessions. The web site features descriptions of the projects, access to an online newsletter, and links.

The Body: An AIDS and HIV Information Resource - USA

The Body is a US-based resource that aims to improve the quality of life of people infected by HIV/AIDS by helping them understand more about their condition and take charge of their health. While not particularly user-friendly, this site contains a wealth of resources and discussion forums to help people who have been diagnosed with HIV and AIDS cope with their infection. The site also offers an "ask the experts" function permitting users to ask questions about a variety of opportunistic infections and precautionary measures for people living with HIV/AIDS. http://www.thebody.com/learning is a sub page of this site that is rich in information for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs or PHAs) and their caregivers.

AIDS Education Global Information System (AEGIS) - USA

This information portal unites a number of different electronic bulletin boards, newsletters, publications, and other references on HIV/AIDS under a single umbrella. The site features information sheets and full-text publications (journals, newsletters, and reports) from various sources for people living with HIV/AIDS, clinicians, policymakers, and journalists.

AIDS Research Information Center - USA

ARIC is a private AIDS medical information service in Baltimore, MD. It operates a mail, e-mail, and telephone AIDS Medical Information Hotline that answers specific HIV/AIDS treatment questions from PLWHAs. The site also features an online AIDS Information Library as well as a Resource Guide for people living with HIV/AIDS.

This site, designed for PLWHAs, aims to improve the lives of people with HIV/AIDS through advocacy, capacity building, and communication. The web site offers users access to publications, upcoming conferences, a newsletter, press releases, and an interactive Web forum.

This basic information portal boasts feature articles, organization and support group directories, book reviews (linked to a bookstore where readers can order books on AIDS and HIV), medical news, and an online community chat room and message board for HIV-infected and affected people.

This site for PLWHAs is a global network offering support to people infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS. The site offers materials to help PLWHAs and their families cope, including positive actions they can take, personal stories, humor, and questions and answers about HIV.

HIVPositive.com - USA

This site is aimed primarily toward people living with HIV/AIDS, and offers guidelines on nutrition, treatments, pain, opportunistic infections, and disclosure to partners and children. The site has a substantial online collection of downloadable videos (with transcripts) on different topics for PLWHAs, as well as drug advisories, news, and financial planning guidelines for PLWHAs.

International Community of Women (ICW) Living with HIV and AIDS - International

ICW is an international network active in more the 80 countries, by and for HIV-positive women. Its goal is to improve the situation of women living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. The site contains information about ICW's mission, activities, information on women and HIV/AIDS, and related links.

KIT Libraries and Information, Royal Tropical Institute - Netherlands

This KIT library resource center, sponsored by the Netherlands Royal Tropical Institute, has a collection of materials on reproductive health, STDs, and HIV/AIDS. The collection features a database of documents, program descriptions, policy papers, gray literature, newsletters, selected articles from journals, leaflets, and posters on HIV/AIDS and Sexual & Reproductive Health in developing countries. Photocopies of selected documents can be sent free of charge to developing countries, but quantities are limited.

This site is very easy to read. It was designed for people who know they are HIV-positive, and contains a wealth of information about HIV, treatments, and medical tests people with HIV often have to assess their health.

YouthHIV - USA

This site is created by and for HIV-positive youth and HIV peer educators. The site offers resources for sexual and mental health information, community support, advocacy, referrals, and online peer education, and is based on the premise that youth have the right to good information about sexuality and the risks of sexual behavior, deserve respect in their decision making, and must assume responsibility for the consequences of their actions.

UNAIDS promotes the GIPA Principle – the Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV - and supports organizations in their work to monitor and promote the greater involvement and active participation of people living with HIV. A website and book concerning the personal conviction of a young woman and her struggle to empower PLWHAs. She states "I share this information for the HIV/AIDS community to sustain for the long haul!
