The National HIV/AIDS prevention
and control council (NACS) was established in
2000. Following this the Amhara Regional HIV/AIDS
prevention and Control Council (ARAC) has been
established under proclamation number 17/1993,
revision 73/1994.
Vision
Realization of a region free of human, economic,
social and psychological impact of HIV/AIDS
Mission
To organize, support, coordinate and monitor
and evaluate all HIV/AIDS prevention &
control activities undertaken by GOs, NGOs,
CBOs, FBOs, POs, PLWHAs and individuals; to
mitigate the overall impact of HIV/AIDS in
the region by mobilizing local resources &
networking with different stakeholders
Objectives
Support institutions to mainstream HIV/AIDS
prevention & control activities
Establish partnership and networking among
different institutions to promote concerted
efforts and enhance experience sharing
Promote the establishment of PLWHAs and build
capacity in response to HIV/AIDS
Promote advocacy through opinion leaders,
religious fathers and among all levels of
government administrations
Advocate and design system to mobilize the
community to participate in the response especially
in provision of care & support.
Structure
ARACS is a cooperated body
headed by the president of the region. The
body consists of members from the regional
government, regional bureaus, religious organizations,
NGOs, the private sector and PLWHAs.
Reporting to ARACS are Zonal
AIDS Council Secretariats from 11 zones.
All Woreda AIDS Council Secretariats report
to the regional and zonal secretariats and
are responsible for administering funding,
monitoring and evaluating community level
projects in the kebeles of their woredas.
