Message from the Mayor of
Addis Ababa on WAD 2004
Message from H.E. Ato Arkebe Oqubai, Mayor of Addis Ababa
On the Occasion of World AIDS Day
December 1, 2004
Today I would like to express my concern for women – our
sisters and daughters. My concern arises from the fact that our
sisters, especially those between the age of 15 and 24, are the
most vulnerable group to HIV/AIDS. They are at risk of acquiring
HIV more than males of the same age group.
Women are the foundation our society is built upon and their
vulnerability to HIV/AIDS has a direct and negative impact on
families as well as the society at large. This necessitates our
joint efforts in seeking solutions.
I have full confidence that with the support of our community,
we can together find a viable solution to this complex problem.
I call upon every resident of the city to reflect upon the issue
and work with me to make a difference and reverse the course the
pandemic is taking.
Arkebe Oqubai
Mayor of Addis Ababa
